A Complicated Start
Natalka’s pregnancy had, up until the final stages, been progressing smoothly. All tests came back normal, and we had every reason to be excited about the birth of our baby girl. But as the weeks passed, complications arose. We were told that our baby had oligohydramnios, a condition where there is too little amniotic fluid surrounding the baby. This led to a difficult decision: our daughter would need to be delivered by cesarean section.
Natalka was born at the beginning of the 37th week of pregnancy. But unfortunately, things didn’t go as we had hoped. Upon her birth, she was diagnosed with a cleft palate and a recessed lower jaw. Though she was given an Apgar score of 8, it was clear that our daughter’s journey would not be an easy one.
The Early Struggles
At birth, Natalka was unable to feed properly, and she was initially tube-fed. It was heartbreaking to see our newborn struggling to take in the nutrition she so desperately needed. But after surgery, we were finally able to teach her how to bottle-feed, and we slowly expanded her diet. This was a small but significant victory, one that filled our hearts with hope for the future.
However, that was just the beginning of Natalka’s medical challenges. She was diagnosed with a second-degree atrial septal defect, a heart condition that required us to visit a cardiologist regularly. In addition, she was diagnosed with bilateral hip dysplasia, which meant she had to wear a brace to help her hips develop properly. The brace, while necessary, also led to delays in her motor development, and it became clear that Natalka’s physical journey would take much longer than we had anticipated.
A Road to Recovery
Despite these obstacles, Natalka has shown remarkable resilience. Today, she attends rehabilitation twice a week. These sessions are crucial for her physical development, but the cost of traveling to specialists and exercise classes has been overwhelming. Not only does she need ongoing rehabilitation, but she also requires a specialized wheelchair to help her move around more independently. This wheelchair is essential for her well-being, as it will help her gain more mobility and allow her to explore the world around her.
